Monthly Recap: June 2019

Hi everyone! I am gonna keep today’s post short and sweet because honestly life is kicking my ass right now – but in the best way possible!

I started a new job today that I am extremely pumped about but will keep my mind busy and my plate full. I’ll also be moving at the beginning of August to get closer to said job, so my evenings and weekends will be filled with house hunting and packing. A lot of really awesome (and slightly scary) changes!

That means that my writing/reading/blogging has fallen a bit behind and will likely stay that way for a bit. That doesn’t mean I won’t be around or won’t be pursuing my dream in every spare moment. But everything has its season, and I am excited to shake things up a bit!

So anyway, let’s get to the reason you’re all here – June’s updates!

What I Wrote

Yet again, I got no writing done this month. And it’s honestly starting to wear on me. I am so ready to dive back into The Blood Between Us, but it’s just taking a bit of a backseat at the moment. I also parted ways with my agent at the beginning of June which – while it was the right decision – feels like a step backward. I am excited to see what the next stages of my writing journey will hold, but now is probably the perfect time to change things up and potentially switch my priorities around a bit – just temporarily.

Coming Up

While revisions for The Blood Between Us are moving slower than I’d like – and by that I mean at a standstill – I still really want to make some forward movement in July. Even if it’s just a few chapters. I did get the rest of my beta feedback, and between that and a wonderful Skype date with my critique partner, I feel like I have a plan for the first act that will really step up my novel’s game. I’ve also *tentatively* decided to aim to enter Pitch Wars this year, so stay tuned for updates on that.

As far as blogging and reading goes, I am hesitant to make any concrete plans or goals. I may be less active this month and next. With a lot going on, I have to really focus on the most important things, and while I love sharing with you guys, I know you will understand me taking a small and temporary step back.

    I’m sorry to hear you’ve parted ways with your agent. I’ve been following your blog for a couple years now, and it’s always been such a wonderful, hopeful thing to hear updates about your writing career (I would say “journey” but that’s a dead metaphor, I think), since you’re always just a few steps ahead of me. It sounds like you have plenty of other good and exciting things happening right now, but I’m sure that doesn’t make this moment easy.

    I’ve been working on the same novel for almost three years, and I started reading your blog around the time you posted about lengthening a novel with JK Rowling’s outlining technique–advice I needed, as my first few drafts were more novella than novel. Throughout the time I’ve spent revising and setting aside my book since then (almost done with my 8th draft, which should be my last), I’ve really appreciated glimpses into the later stages of the process through your blog. It’s a brave and hard thing to share updates on something as uncertain and deeply personal as writing. So, even if this post isn’t the triumphant update you’d once hoped it’d be, thank you. For what it’s worth, Alexa Donne has a video on youtube about the time she parted ways with an agent a few years ago. She is now a traditionally published author. If you need a pick-me up, you should check her out.
